Azides are used in environmentally friendly pyrotechnics, and recently the Sharpless group and others have been exploiting azides to form triazole and tetrazole links using "click chemistry".
In the pharmaceutical industry, azides are employed in the manufacture of drugs such as AZT and Sartans at annual volumes of over 500 metric tons per year. Uses include gas generation, high nitrogen compounds, and synthesis of amino compounds such as amino sugars where introduction of the amino group is otherwise very difficult.
Azides have the potential to cause problems by rapid decomposition and toxicity. Sodium azide, TMS-azide and hydrazoic acid require careful attention on reaction conditions, equipment issues and worker safety.
